Mark Williams is Co-Founder and Creative Director at That Thing. As a graduate of Central St Martins, he’s spent years building national and global brands across media, health, finance and automotive sectors. While a designer by trade, Mark’s skills stretch across the whole spectrum of challenges brands face. An interdisciplinary creative who brings a love of music and entertainment to every project he works on. Mark has worked across the world on projects from Australia to America. But India holds a special place in his heart. Having worked with Star to launch Star Sports and Star Plus he also spent time living in Mumbai collaborating with Reliance to create India’s biggest 4G network, Jio. He’s worked to launch and relaunch brands including Sky, TransferWise, Little Chef, Penguin, Liberty Global and Manchester United TV.
At That Thing, he and his co-founder Joe Weir have built a brand studio all around the play between writing and design. He has led brand projects for the global consultancy Kearney, the award-winning Leva rebrand, the commercial EV start-up Arrival, the fund manager Gravis and the PE-backed Easyfundraising and South Korea K-pop royalty Bemyfriends. Currently, Mark is leading a large rebrand project for one of the world’s most iconic names in music.
Joe Weir is Co-Founder and Head of Words and Story at That Thing. After studying a combination of philosophy and professional writing, Joe’s spent his career taking big, complex ideas and translating them into ‘Things’ that people can understand and remember. At That Thing, he and his Co-Founder Mark Williams have built a brand studio all around the play between writing and design.Throughout his career as a writer, Joe’s worked with clients including Guinness, Twinings, O2, British Airways, XL, Penguin Sky, and NOW entertainment. Before founding That Thing, Joe started his career at one of the world’s first brand language agencies – The Writer. He worked at venturethree and has had stints consulting with Adidas, Wolff Olins, Fitch WPP and DesignStudio. His work with Little Chef won him a slice of a D&AD Writing for Design award, a category he’s also been selected to judge twice. At That Thing Joe heads up the words side as co-creative director. He’s brought his writing to projects for Virgin Active, and climate tech brands including Arrival and HVS. He is currently leading a large rebrand project for one of the world’s most iconic names in music.
