Tania Singh Khosla is the design director and founder of tsk Design, a graphic design consultancy in Bangalore, India. After graduating with an MFA in Graphic Design from Yale University, USA, Tania returned to India to establish the firm in 1996. The firm works in the areas of Brand Identity Design, Publication and Web Design, Retail and Environmental Graphics.
tsk Design has created effective brand solutions for some of India’s leading companies across corporate and hospitality businesses, while parallely engaging with design for culture and the arts. Both in the professional work undertaken by the firm as well as in self initiated projects, Tania Singh Khosla is involved in exploring the relationship between cultural context and contemporary Indian design. Khosla states, “I express my context through a visual language that is essentially hybrid. One that embraces an Indian aesthetic that is decorative, excessive, colorful and tends to be labor intensive while being rational, controlled, careful and efficient.” In practice, Khosla’s work negotiates a careful balance between her personal sensibilities and the parameters of a project, with many corporate clients seeking an internationalist, rather than an Indian image. However, her ongoing work for boutique hospitality and retail companies in Bangalore, Hyderabad and Marrakech amongst others, demonstrates a sophisticated understanding of what Indian-ness in design could constitute – a blend of contemporary design with historical influences, of the technologically sophisticated and the hand crafted.
The work of tsk Design has been featured in numerous international books and publications including Creative Review, Eye and Wallpaper (UK), How and Interiors (USA); books such as Indian Design (Daab, Netherlands), Night Fever (Frame Publications, Amsterdam), Eating and Designing (Index Books, Spain). Their work has been showcased at international exhibitions such as Global-Local at the V&A, London, Wallpaper’s GlobalEdit at Salone Del Mobile, Milan featuring 100 top emerging designers form 10 countries around the world, and more recently at the Experimenta Design Exhibition, Lisbon.
Tania is married to Sandeep Khosla one of India’s leadings architects. The graphic design firm tsk Design and the architecture practice Khosla Associates are housed in the same structure with a talented and dynamic team of designers. Over the years, this has led to an exciting cross pollination of ideas between graphics, architecture and product design which has manifested itself in collaborative projects such as the MTV Office, Bangalore, Touch, a lounge bar in Hyderabad, a contemporary Indian restaurant Khyber in Mumbai, and Global Local a show for the British Council amongst others. Currently, Sandeep and Tania along with their colleague Amaresh Anand have embarked on an exciting new project Teapoy Collective where graphics, typography, product and furniture design converge. Teapoy Collective designs and produces objects of joy and beauty that are cotemporary and Indian with a dash of the whimsical.
